Background:

Personality: Indigo is almost unflappable and can seem almost too calm. She doesn’t get emotional until after a crisis has passed. She’s unlikely to exhibit reactions to a variety of stimuli. Her lack of attachment to many of the things most Gemali, Draconi, Draconici develop attachments to is almost an anomoly. She’s emotionally distant with most sentients. She’s not really a ‘superhero’ in the typical sense, but is a supporting type. She’s more comfortable working behind the scenes, where she’s more efficient. She typically works indirectly, helping keep her physical appearance and gender a mystery so she can move about with relative freedom.

While she is quite zealous about guarding her privacy, Indigo is much more social online, via IRC/IMs email and BBs/forums. The communication is not reliant upon hearing, and one is more likely to see ‘more’ of her actual self, therein, than in person, where she is very quiet, reserved and almost aloof due to her deafness. Describes herself as a cynical optimist: Hope for the best, prepare for the worst and settle for something in between. Maybe she's just a realist or a pragmatist?

She's is something of a tinkerer and a dreamer, teetering on the edge between genius and dilettante, she's curious and interested in many things, although she's not overly ambitious. She's got superb control over her original, racial psi-talents. She's fairly pragmatic and ethical in their use...but she is decidedly unhappy about her newly found wild-talent (phase-shifting/plane-shifting).

Indigo has suffered from bouts of melencholy--or depression--most of her life, and while she's capable of dealing with it most of the time, she has found that Niels, her bouncing, mutate of a cat and Talon, that annoyingly handsome, irritatingly charming, persistent fellow that's so deftly integrated himself into her life and made himself utterly indispensable to her won't let her bury herself in tinkering or artwork or hacking. They'll drag her out of the lab or garage, tidy her up, feed her, cuddle her and refuse to let her remain isolated...and while Indigo may kvetch and grumble about it, she's it really means a lot to her that they -do- care so much about her. Quite frankly, Talon lifts her spirits and buoys her as much as she grounds and anchors him, so they each balance the other.

History: Indigo's family had enjoyed a solid, stable life as academics, scholars and a few of them are among the rare ones who'd had been exposed to a mysterious phenomenon (the embedding of numerous Dragongems in their body) that apparently gave them the ability to spontaneously reincarnate and a rarer few a psychic ability to manipulate/ create crystal). This particular "gift" was considered a great blessing by most.

Her family had earned their way into the lower nobility by virtue of their contributions to the greater whole of their society. They comfortably well off, financially secure and afford the niceties, though there is a greater emphasis on acquiring knowledge, such as rare books or travels to new areas to learn being emphasized over flaunting ofmaterial wealth for its own sake. They weren't especially socially ambitious, but some were quite ambitious and competitive in intellectual and academic matters.

Indigo had been raised and tutored by Azoreboratati (aka Azo, a disguised dragon who was one of her sires). She was 'unschooled' in the Dragoni tradition, allowed to explore her various diverse areas of interest over her formative years. While she had a good relationship with her parents, she was neither demanding nor needy--rather being quiet, independent and she did quite nicely with Azo or on her own. She also lacked the desire to 'compete' or 'colaborate' with her siblings. She was an explorer, dreamer and liked to consider the possibilities and potential as ideas. She wasn't driven to achieve as her other siblings were. She continued her apprenticeship to Azo and drifted into various areas of scholarly pursuit and mastery. Her curiosity leading her into social sciences, psychology and then into other forms of science. Meanwhile, her family had drifted to the periphery of her life. She travelled with Azo and another scholar named 'Shy'--they explored, researched and followed their odd path to some significant finds and history.

Indigo, herself was sufficiently bright and talented, as well as interested in a variety of subjects to be chosen to bond with one of the highly respected sapphire dragons of her homeland. She bonded with Nilashyamanagendra--the Sapphire Dragon--much to the surprise of her family, none of whom had ever earned such a coveted opportunity. Indigo ultimately outlived many of her peers and family members, becoming something of a legend that was passed down in the family lore, but when she left them behind, she entered a whole different 'world'...

It was during this period of her life that Indigo gained the beautiful tattoos she's had most of her life. She earned a level of recognition and prestige in her scholarly pursuits, as well as her travels--earning her own noble rank. And by then, she and Shy were more than just good friends. Strangely, her family paid her little mind when she finally earned her title--though she received some nice gifts and cordial notes that were probably penned by her parents' private secretary..however..everything went ballistic when it was announced that she was the bondmate of the scion of sapphire dragonkind, Nilashyamanagendra.

Indigo's marked interest in cultures, customs and how/why people do what they do. This also encompassed an interest in their arts, philosophy, history and technology as well. Interests shared with Shy, whom had become far more than her bondmate and best friend. They were a rare love-match between dragon and humanoid bondmates. Their years marked by various 'living jewels' embedded in her body. Those were actually Shy's dragonscales, the ritual marking each Shieldmeet anniversary of their bonding (roughly every five years, and Indigo has roughly 25-30 in each limb--some 750 years spent together) in a long, loving relationship. Unfortunately, Indigo's family and Clan situation deteriorated to the point that she severed her Clan ties and only kept in touch with a very few of her birth-kin. She was thence forth known as Shy's contractual and soulwelded mate, a part of his dragonkin.

However, Indigo can't remember the events that separated herself and Shy...resulting in her being marooned in Otherworld. She, Tessa and Emma have speculated on two likely scenarios: Shy may have altered her memories and sent her to the Otherworld for her own safety, though why is unknown. She retains almost full memory of their early relationship and love, their activities, up until about a year before the bond apparently vanished. There are no signs of trauma or psychic damage to her mind or memories.

The other possibility involved something none of them really wanted to be one. The possibility that Indigo had "died", under unknown circumstances, and re-emerged in the Otherworld. This could've explained the severed bond with her dragon, the lack of memories and inability to explain how or why she simply turned up one day in Roma's Starlight Citadel. She'd lost her tattoos and the gems/scales that'd been grafted into her skin over the years. No one knew the fate of her bondmate, nor can they 'trace' her realm of origin. Indigo had been left disoriented, in shock and adrift without her bondmate. She was profoundly lonely without Shy, feeling almost unbearably empty and grieving his loss...the loss of the soulweld and stability she'd enjoyed with him.
Her apparent 'death' may have triggered her apotheosis as she certainly isn't a 'normal' Gemali anymore.

Later, Indigo wound up on Earth and was 'adopted' by a retired couple--a history & literature professor and her researcher agriculturist/botanist husband--and travelled the world with them, learning about life on this side the Veil and gaining an appreciation for what humanity is capable of--for good or ill. It was during one of those less-than-sterling moments that Indigo lost her adoptive family and discovered her wild-talent for phase/plane-shifting. She phase-shifted into the Astral moments before the aircraft they were travelling in was severely damaged in a battle between the Avengers and some of their enemies near NYC.

The incident left her very skittish of flying in any kind of vehicle, though she has since been willing to fly in Emma Frost's private jet, piloted by Dr. McCoy or Tessa, with Emma telepathically sedating her somewhat, though she still doesn't find the experience something she cares to endure very often.

As the sole survivor, she came to the attention of the Xavier Institute via Nick Fury and SHIELD--she was hired as a teacher, given a new legal identity and paper trail. She was to hide in plain sight, pretending to be a "normal" mutant...when in reality, she's not even human!

Indigo still feels like an outsider among outsiders and spends much of her free time in the attic loft she claimed for her own, working on her digital art or some hacktivist project. She's managed to recover her possessions from Little Avalon and the company of her unusual cat, Niels, hoping rebuild something of a temporary home at the Institute while she sought to gain greater control over her unwanted wild-talent.

She's a hobbyist artist, a geek. Even becoming a hacktivist in support of causes she deems worthy. She's NOT a superhero. No way. No how. They were responsible for the death of her beloved adoptive parents and the others on the plane. That she has a rather dim view of costumed adventurers is understandable. Indigo's also got another aspect to her private life that only a couple of her trusted friends know about. She's a "hactivist" and white hat hacker under the name of Ana Nymue or AnaNym. She's appeared in disguise at Defcon and other conferences over the past few years. She's kept her edge in espionage and acquisitions doing some industrial/ corporate work for Emma Frost, working in partnership with Tessa.

"Officially", she doesn't know anything about the Xavier Institute's connection to X-Factor or X-Force, or anything other than the fact that it's a school for young metahumans and a research thinktank. She doesn’t "officially" know about the Blackbird or that holodeck in the lowest levels...or so everyone else thinks. Unofficially, she knows a lot more than they think she does...and Indigo even knows some things that nobody else does--like the existence of the AI she's nicknamed "Avatar" or "Ava" for short, and for whom she's modeled and textured a 3d mesh 'avatar'--allowing Ava the dignity of a physical form, and a voice 'borrowed' from Star Trek's Majel Barrett-Roddenberry.

She occasionally butts heads around the Institute. She's an introvert and zealously guards her privacy--including the attic loft she claimed in the wake of Ororo Munroe's marriage to the King of Wakanda. Only she and Niels can access the loft and bypass her security systems. She's never invited anyone up to visit, but spends time with Emma, Hank and Forge in the lower-level labs.

However, other distractions appeared in her life. It all started with a dare. "Mon ami japonaise, I bet ya'll can't get a rise out of Mademoiselle Indigo...or le chat damnés," Remy had taunted Akio , "And that *I* can..."

And unable to resist the challenge, confident that he could do what the Cajun 'charmer' had been unable to do in the past year, since the mysterious "Miss Indigo" had come to the Xavier Institute. And so, they'd each gone about their individual strategies, each endeavouring to discover what made Miss Indigo tick.

The Cajun tried to sweet talk her, or those few friends she had, into divulging something...anything...about her. But he was left with more questions than answers...and alas, gained nothing aside from her usual distant courtesy upon the occasions she had to deal with Remy. Akio , however, watched Indigo, patiently studying her, her habits and interactions. He learned she shied away from socializing outside of her very few friends such as Dr. McCoy, Miss Frost, Miss Tessa, Sir Bennet du Paris and young prodigy, Adam Rykos.

He noted that three out of five were known telepaths and all were intellectual prodigies with several shared aspects of expertise...technology in particular. He also noted unusual qualities to her voice when she spoke, a peculiar flatness he'd been able to cross reference and verify with online video of various hearing impaired people who could speak. She tended to prefer small groups, ostensibly where she could keep track of the conversation and lipreading more easily--or keep company with fellow telepaths and intellectuals where the ideas and conversation could flow freely from mind to mind.

Small wonder that scruffy Cajun had no luck making an impression on Miss Indigo! She certainly seemed value her privacy and be something of an outsider among outsiders, but perhaps, she wasn't as aloof as other's believed her to be? From his research, Akio had learned that the deaf could be even further isolated from the hearing world. So, he'd figured out the basic problem. He still had to find a way to elicit a reaction from the mysterious Miss Indigo.

For that, he'd spoken to a number of the non-telepathic denizens of the Institute...and learned of the 'usual' training they'd received from Dr. Xavier and Miss Grey. Things like how to keep a hostile psi out of one's head or make oneself heard to a telepathic teammate. Such exercises and skills weren't too different from the things he'd learned from the mystics and psychics in the Hand...

However, Xavier may have also subtly influenced Gambit into making that wager in the first place, since Indigo had proven highly resistant to his telepathy, mistrustful and reticent to nearly all overtures made to her. (Xavier is not even aware that she's profoundly deaf!) Akio turned out to be far more clever than Xavier ever gave him credit for being--as Akio found he actually liked Indigo as he learned more about her, he'd also discovered that she was rather resistant to his pheremonal powers. That was fine with him--if Indigo showed an interest in him, it would be earned upon his own merits.

And so, Akio approached Indigo one morning... It started with... [Hullo...]

She has gotten the attention of a fellow 'outsider', Tsume Akihiro or Akio aka Talon, whose curiosity will not be denied. Akio seems to be turning up more questions than answers in his research of the mysterious Indigo. He's learned a few tidbits--such as her love for Junior Mints, preference for sandalwood body/bath products. She's definitely not a cook, though she seems to assemble a variety of salads and sandwiches in her kitchenette. She's almost a neat-freak, being more organised and having more interesting 'stuff' than McCoy, Stark, the Mandarin, Forge, Box, the Mad Thinker and the Tinkerer combined!

Akio's seen the Leonardo-esque sketchbooks, schematics, chapbooks and illustrations in her neatly orgnaised online gallery. Though her handwritten notes appear to be in an Oriental language, he can't read it. It's not Japanese, nor Chinese, nor Mongol, nor Korean, nor Arabic, nor Sanskrit, Hindi, Urdu, Pasto nor any of the other languages he's familiar with. He's realised he's dealing with an unconventional multi-focus genius of unknown age, origins and species.

In turn, the young man was quite interesting to Indigo, though she wasn't sure of Akio's motive. He could carry on a good conversation on a variety of subjects, in several languages--and he was a very good model, posing for a series of classical, fine art sketches she would later digitally colour or paint. Indigo couldn't quite figure out what it was that she liked about him or why...maybe it was something in those intense jewel blue eyes or the subtle empathic sense that she could trust him, in spite of his reputation around the Institute?

The problem for Akio was that he felt things he didn't understand in regards to Indigo. He'd figured out that she's been suffering from a sort of long-term depression or separation anxiety. He's not aware that she's grieving the loss of the love of her life and the bond that'd been her normal for most of her life. He has, however, found a crack in her shell and has been patiently probing; studying and finding leverage to further open it. His emotional response to Indigo goes beyond his 'usual' conquests. He feels drawn to her for reasons he can't fathom, he finds reasons to be in her company--even if it's just driving her down to the city for a supply run to the computer or electronics superstore or a surplus auction, or just an excuse to get out of the stifling atmosphere of the Institute and escape the bloody soap opera.

Akio'd inadvertently 'reached' Indigo, on an emotional level. She's in somewhat vulnerable place--wanting company, but being unsure of whom she can trust outside her few close friends, who include Adam Rykos, Emma Frost, Bennet DuParis, Hank McCoy and her personal assistant, Tessa--but Akio's slow, patient approach combined with his wit, charm, cocky grin and sparkling blue eyes had a curious effect on the deaf telepath...and her feline friend...Akio's a bit panther-like, which Indigo seems to like. But, it was his keen mind that really engaged her curiosity and interest in things.

On the flip side, Indigo got to know the keen mind and quick wit behind the pretty face, gorgeous form and cocky smirk. She certainly never meant to get lost in stunning blue eyes. Nor did Akio ever imagine he'd fall in love. He wasn't sure if he was capable of it. He didn't realise the things he was experiencing were an emerging affection for the deaf woman...he more than liked her company, and she certainly seemed to enjoy his.

Akio found himself modeling for Indigo's art and sharing some pretty deep, intellectual conversations. He was bemused and amused at being in various states of en dishabille for anything but the 'usual' reasons with a beautiful woman. So far, he's managed to impress her with those serious intellectual discussions, managed to get her to crack a grin or laugh, even relate a joke...she's even hugged him in purely platonic, friendly terms--and that'd been a first. He'd begun to get the idear that Indigo was interested in a lot more than what the Cajun thief'd ever realised.

Later on, after Emma and Hank had run some tests--using the Otherworldly Col. Elise Braddock, her sister Tessa and cousin, Eithne Brightblade as controls, they discovered what Indigo had known in her gut--after an embarrassing revelation and re-resolved maiden state for the second time in her long existence, it had kinda helped all the pieces fall into place: her mysteriously missing tattoos, the missing dragongems, her mysterious appearance in the Otherworld. It'd been like a punch in the gut. Hank, Emma and Elise had the concrete, scientific proof that her rational mind required.

Indigo's quantum signature matched Elise and Tessa's. The elemental composition of her body echoed materials from the Otherworld--though her biochemistry and physiology were still copacetic for her species: A Crystalai offshoot of Draconici. It was also pretty clear that Indigo wasn't exactly the same woman she'd been prior to appearing in Otherworld. She'd needed the confirmation, the closure so she could move on--but the knowledge she was forever separated from her homeworld, father and people hurt deeply.

"I'm the one who died..." her mind kept coming back to that refrain, and she was 'dead' to Shy, Azo and her homeworld. She could never go back, since she couldn't find the way.
Indigo was alone, with nothing to connect her to the people, places and world she loved, save her memories. IF she was 'dead' to them, would anyone mourn her loss as she did them? Would anyone miss her? So many questions swirling in her mind...and so few answers.

Akio wrapped her up in his arms, picking up on her emotional chaos and understanding her lingering apathy and depression. Hank's news hadn't been good for her...and he didn't imagine he'd take it well, finding himself the only human on an alien world. And while he couldn't make the hurt go away, Akio knew he could make sure Indigo knew she wasn't alone. He'd be there for her; he'd stay with her…and that crazy, bouncing cat of hers…a novel notion for him, but something that felt completely right.

And in from there, her story was only really beginning....
